The Baby Sleep Project Resources

Welcome to the Baby Sleep Project Resources page

This page is exclusively for health professionals taking part in the Baby Sleep Project. Please watch the training video first – it is 22 minutes long and separated into chapters. Please watch it all the way through at least once!

TRAINING VIDEO (click to watch)

You can choose which resources to use with which families, so please familiarise yourself with all of them. The Milestones card has been designed for families with babies in hospital, but all the other resources can be used both at home or in hospital.

Animation to show families

You can download flyers with QR codes and links to the Baby Sleep Planner and the animation for families here, or send us an email and we’ll pop some paper ones in the post for you:

MILESTONES CARDS (for babies on a neonatal unit)

We can send you hard copies of the cards by post – email babysleep@bristol.ac.uk

You can also download the Milestones card in the language you require:

When you have finished watching the training video please go ahead and try out the resources with families. Please make sure these are DIFFERENT families to those you told about the study before. We should have sent you new intro cards for you to use with families who have seen the resources.

REMINDER: Don’t forget to complete your first NoMAD survey here: https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/sps/nomad-survey-1

If you have any questions or feedback please feel free to contact the study team at babysleep@bristol.ac.uk or on 07811 038 635.

Thank you so much for taking part in this research!

FAQS

Frequently asked questions:

Which families should I use the resources with?

You can use them with whoever you like, but we hope that you will focus on those families who need them the most – those with infants at increased risk. This would include anyone eligible for extra support from health visiting services, anyone who sees a family nurse partnership nurse, and any family with a baby on a neonatal unit. This also includes any families with previously identified risk factors.

When should we use the resources with families

Please use the resources as you see fit during late antenatal or early postnatal visits. We’d like families to complete the first survey after seeing the resources when their babies are 3-4 weeks old so before then would be great.

Can I include caregivers with literacy difficulties?

We’ve made a video to share with caregivers with literacy difficulties – please watch it here: Baby Sleep participant information (2)

What do we mean by families at ‘increased risk’?

Ideally, the caregivers would be receiving extra support i.e. they are families with identified additional risks. This could include families that have identified risks during the antenatal period, or families with any relevant indicators, for example poverty, social care involvement, young parents, neonatal unit admission, smoking, poor mental health, overcrowding, and/or drug and alcohol issues.

How many families should I use the resource/s with?

We’d like you to use the resources with at least five families.

Two caregivers from the same family wish to take part in the surveys – is this ok?

No, we’d like ONLY one primary caregiver to respond to the surveys, as the answers to the questions would be the same. We recognise that not all primary caregivers are mothers, and fathers are also primary caregivers, so whoever is responsible for looking after the baby can take part, including foster carers.

Which resources do we use with families?

– Your new conversation skills from the training video
– The Baby Sleep Planner
– The Baby Sleep Project Animation (‘Your sleeping baby’s needs’)

We think these three resources apply to all families (particularly those at increased risk) and can each be used during conversations about safer sleep. You can choose which one/s are most appropriate to use with which family.

– Safer sleep milestones for babies: This resource applies to families with a baby on a neonatal unit. Staff should use professional judgement about which babies can be given a card and only include those who are anticipated to be discharged home in the future.

Who should we invite to take part in the surveys?

You can show the resources to as many families as you like – we don’t need all of them to take part in the surveys. We’d link ONLY families with additional risks (see above) to take part in the surveys.
